Technically this is a WIP because I still need to do some work on it but it was worthy of being snapped for a blog post. I am not that happy with the two riders which could have ended up looking a bit nicer, but overall I am happy with this as a test piece. I have three more to do it this batch, and the next one will be reversed so that the main chassis is red and the detailing is green.<br />

Actually this will probably end up being half a troupe, because I will most likely run them in 12s. There was more that I could have done on these, but overall I was happy with the look of the unit as a whole and it was time to move on.<br />

I am now working on another test mini, this time a Skyweaver from what will eventually be a unit of four. After that it will be time to tackle some of the single minis from this release... I am particularly looking forward to doing the Shadowseer.Danny Kastigaunthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17906083369915618434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1922838597775752652.post-67262123623493376962015-02-22T13:30:00.002-08:002015-02-22T13:30:30.769-08:00Harlequin Test Mini No.2Just a quick post this week. I've completed my second Harlequin test mini so I thought I'd post a few pictures. I am not entirely pleased with this mini, but I am still road-testing the paint scheme so that's to be expected. I really enjoyed doing the checks and this is definitely my favourite thing about doing Harlequins.<br />

My first troupe is well on its way to being finished, and the whole squad will be my next blog post. I'll also post a final picture of the Troupe Leader who is having a bit more work before going into a painting competition in our local GW. I prefer to blog on a variety of models, but I am afraid that for a while its going to be Harlequins, Harlequins and more Harlequins while I work on what will be my third gaming army. (To my shame my Tau army remains less than half finished, but that will have to be tackled another time.)</div>

I am a big fan of Rogue Trader style minis, and I am a big fan of GW's current range of plastics. The current range of new stuff is the best of both worlds and I am so impressed that I am thinking of painting and collecting a full army. I've painted up a troupe master as a test mini.<br />

<div>
Originally I said that I wasn't brave enough to attempt diamond checks, but I have been practising my freehand for the last year and in the end I got the nerve together to give it a go. In the end I didn't find it anywhere near as difficult as I was expecting, although it is rather time consuming.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This mini isn't entirely finished. Our local GW is running a Harlequin painting competition at the end of the month, so I am going to add some more freehand to him before he goes in, but this is about the standard I am aiming for with the bulk of the stuff that I am planning to paint.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The purple and white texture based was an experiment, and although it is growing on me I will trying something a lot more tradition out next before I make a decision about how the whole army will look.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will probably add some free hand to the back of the cloak and do some highlighting work on the ribbons before he goes off to be judged. I will also be trying to improve the gems and metallics a lot which are rather basic at the moment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<b>Update:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a quick snap showing the grid for the checks on another mini from this squad. It looks pretty awful at this stage, but that's fine because there's plenty of opportunity to tidy them up as you fill the checks in. I start the red checks off using GW Khorne Red which has a nice strong coverage and is great for smoothing out a shaky diamond or two!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Usually I can't raise much enthusiasm for power armour, but there's a lot of extra stuff on this mini that makes it a bit more fun, I had another go at Object Source Lighting from the green eye lenses onto the bone faceplate which was reasonably successful but difficult to see in this picture.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I set myself the challenge of doing a freehand Salamanders symbol which was well worth it in the end despite it looking like a happy crocodile for a while before I did some final tweaks!</div>

Here he is in his blister. I love getting brand new metal minis out of old-fashioned blister packs because it reminds me of when I first got into the hobby. That said, the current range of GW plastics is absolutely top drawer and I am entirely convinced that plastic is the way forward. I took delivery of the new Harlequins on the first day of release and I cannot wait to get to grips with them.</div>

Although I am trying to spend less time just doing scheme-matches, when I saw the <a href="http://www.asterix.com/the-a-to-z-of-asterix/characters/obelix.html">Obelix</a>-inspired scheme that the GW painters had used I had to give it a go.<br />
<br />
The painting time on this mini was approx 8 hours 30 minutes,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBppvORg4KtYVVKNknon1cWGMMtHB66Ng5zGlKzISyxY_nl_B4j6nfNohK_lS3mWgPbAnwMc6Hyt-KoiqUXbJ5gPvH8PNJ-W_vtHkEs1zt3nsxY3mwSigcrEl7qm3q211L6EZIlLBATe8/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBppvORg4KtYVVKNknon1cWGMMtHB66Ng5zGlKzISyxY_nl_B4j6nfNohK_lS3mWgPbAnwMc6Hyt-KoiqUXbJ5gPvH8PNJ-W_vtHkEs1zt3nsxY3mwSigcrEl7qm3q211L6EZIlLBATe8/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" height="400" width="352" /></a></div>
The ginger beard was a particularly satisfying bit of painting. I used the GW recommended scheme for Space Wolf beards - Jokaero Orange with a brown wash followed by Trollslayer and Fire Dragon highlights. I do struggle a bit to get decent coverage with Jokaero but I got there in the end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96fNGhg8XYmnaRmulJpKoEKUSJ0ygMaSZHtz5Z1X3oV52x31mkzMyKFq9idGjUrgjhtZsWCQ_m5A5UH4i5avqIEyktejlpUwpTpiKNtHZG7hhyhlgBgIIoX8qu8DGtbm7aYkXlrtWpuk/s1600/FullSizeRender_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96fNGhg8XYmnaRmulJpKoEKUSJ0ygMaSZHtz5Z1X3oV52x31mkzMyKFq9idGjUrgjhtZsWCQ_m5A5UH4i5avqIEyktejlpUwpTpiKNtHZG7hhyhlgBgIIoX8qu8DGtbm7aYkXlrtWpuk/s1600/FullSizeRender_1.jpg" height="400" width="270" /></a></div>
The Obelix trouser stripes where a great test of free hand which I really enjoyed, I only remembered after I had finished that the GW version also has a really nice free-hand tattoo which I had meant to have a go at. I may yet go back and add it to the mini, but for now its time to move on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj71GwGLNtHVWAJgSJ36KOa_uU77UPrJS4L-6NfqmqctQJfQ_R91AfESFUjyHVM58SYrWSXvpqrwY-5MihGD7k2wQry8FQi9GoAC2Q41EGD2k5YkInB0WDnu9SW0DZofjBtvIjYRBkiUfo/s1600/FullSizeRender_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj71GwGLNtHVWAJgSJ36KOa_uU77UPrJS4L-6NfqmqctQJfQ_R91AfESFUjyHVM58SYrWSXvpqrwY-5MihGD7k2wQry8FQi9GoAC2Q41EGD2k5YkInB0WDnu9SW0DZofjBtvIjYRBkiUfo/s1600/FullSizeRender_2.jpg" height="400" width="321" /></a></div>
I've been trying to improve my metallics and although they aren't as good as I want them to be yet, I am quite a lot happier. The gold detail on the axe is built up from GW Warplock, followed by Gehenna's Gold, Auric Armour Gold with some Runefang mixed in for the final highlight.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgElzGlbx1E5a5vkP-Sz3U7zdWdBnN2A05LS5aon5e6sMwdvcuzR07KPahzXxXYg41kyZCegTx49lcmYyUD6LRi_ftjiUnBvwXPchjCh-jkvpPspRfMaAr0GVXG17xO_Xw-1lRnKldptxs/s1600/FullSizeRender_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgElzGlbx1E5a5vkP-Sz3U7zdWdBnN2A05LS5aon5e6sMwdvcuzR07KPahzXxXYg41kyZCegTx49lcmYyUD6LRi_ftjiUnBvwXPchjCh-jkvpPspRfMaAr0GVXG17xO_Xw-1lRnKldptxs/s1600/FullSizeRender_3.jpg" height="400" width="325" /></a></div>
The stone dragon was surprisingly time-consuming but worth it overall I think as it is actually a big part of the mini. If I was going to be critical I would say GW are over-using the idea of having models vaulting off pieces of masonry just at the moment, but it is a fun look so I will let them off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There's so much going in this sculpt that you can photograph it from pretty much any angle. It is one of my all-time favourites and I am very pleased to have a painted one in my collection.<br />

<br />
Regular readers will know that 40k Cat - real name Molly - can't resist getting involved when I am taking pictures of my minis for this blog, or when we are playing 40k. I've managed to get some really fun pictures, and I am quite proud that she features several times in the top <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1366&bih=624&q=%2240k+cat%22&oq=%2240k+cat%22&gs_l=img.3...2016.5076.0.5389.11.10.1.0.0.0.165.668.9j1.10.0.msedr...0...1ac.1.61.img..2.9.624.J9cAa6SQd1Y">Google Image search results for "40k Cat"</a>!<br />
<br />
Here are my favourites:<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh34c0PUd5mtYKpz6bu5MBhdoGDvPjjVOLWtzxs-bLS29vCluIPqfiLo5VU0bVqa8G6D0x3xCZJLDL3PnHW7zshTcVOf6ouPeuQS9oibor0RryqemH40HWENvOOGh9-nFypTMZW7JWYNcU/s1600/40k+cat+talon.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh34c0PUd5mtYKpz6bu5MBhdoGDvPjjVOLWtzxs-bLS29vCluIPqfiLo5VU0bVqa8G6D0x3xCZJLDL3PnHW7zshTcVOf6ouPeuQS9oibor0RryqemH40HWENvOOGh9-nFypTMZW7JWYNcU/s1600/40k+cat+talon.JPG" height="497" width="640" /></a></div>
This picture of 40k Cat biting my <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/space-marine-stormtalon-conversion.html">converted Stormtalon</a> is far and away the most popular, and when I looked today was the top result on Google Images for "40k Cat". This picture was also picked up by some sort of Cat-forum in China or Hong Kong at one point too...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

...this picture of 40k Cat inspecting the troops before a game is my personal favourite...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_pOW30qsx4MNO31iD3X9jTDkna-mGXXlcGwhdMwLB5GcEe7hClXbApygQqlZDdeuHgdPwOrCbpdpAYzvXb1YjyH-ky4VFZcSAwa04aXfxvGWRkYo618LO1Bu8t1W_v_OT-9IQsJPG33U/s1600/40k+cat+objective.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_pOW30qsx4MNO31iD3X9jTDkna-mGXXlcGwhdMwLB5GcEe7hClXbApygQqlZDdeuHgdPwOrCbpdpAYzvXb1YjyH-ky4VFZcSAwa04aXfxvGWRkYo618LO1Bu8t1W_v_OT-9IQsJPG33U/s1600/40k+cat+objective.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
...this sort of behaviour during games is entertaining, but she needs careful policing to make sure that she doesn't bulldoze too many models out of the way...<br />

Finally, here is a very rare picture of Warhammer Fantasy Battlecat - 40k Cat's sister, who is a great deal shyer about having her photograph taken, and much less interested in eating Citadal Miniatures! As it happens I am currently working on a fantasy mini - a Dwarf Troll Slayer - which should be ready for post number 101 next week.<br />

I've been clearing a couple of things from my painting queue including two more 1980s <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/space%20ork%20raiders%20project">Space Ork Raiders</a> which have been an ongoing project for some time now.<br />

The painting time for these two was approximately 2 hours per model. I was a little bit disappointed with this as I was aiming for more like 90 minutes, and I have another 8 minis to go on this project. As usual I am painting these as closely as possible to the box art. It can be a bit tricky because the main picture on the box isn't actually of the models.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-xTdGDWogU9jZBwSYUNek3WGcOQUZR-mgdL_-YcW64xaOrNg5-PA39C94PnXXgzHLJ7RX1tOvnj0UYbNUPLpX2IUG-8cXVRjxwFasn_kLUgLTgEQmEguiGzhKgLT45GOTv8Lg-ygQAxM/s1600/IMG_1537.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-xTdGDWogU9jZBwSYUNek3WGcOQUZR-mgdL_-YcW64xaOrNg5-PA39C94PnXXgzHLJ7RX1tOvnj0UYbNUPLpX2IUG-8cXVRjxwFasn_kLUgLTgEQmEguiGzhKgLT45GOTv8Lg-ygQAxM/s1600/IMG_1537.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
There is a picture of the minis on the back which is what I'm working from, but it is rather small. The two mins that I have completed today are on the back row, second from left and first from right.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsxzKocat6KmVBk5nwovjCM2eyml3LV4TkkyOIuCDuUxb6ixnC3lAaeRaklGWfFclaZ1S-O6l1PKujYa04GdePG5wzMl6JlxS2zVRlccP-IRh2W5Az2XtFTwDqB9GnzzvfPOSJ_EOghrI/s1600/IMG_2055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsxzKocat6KmVBk5nwovjCM2eyml3LV4TkkyOIuCDuUxb6ixnC3lAaeRaklGWfFclaZ1S-O6l1PKujYa04GdePG5wzMl6JlxS2zVRlccP-IRh2W5Az2XtFTwDqB9GnzzvfPOSJ_EOghrI/s1600/IMG_2055.JPG" height="274" width="640" /></a></div>
The box also includes a very simple painting guide... Of course all these colours are long obsolete. I am quite pleased that with my effort to reproduce the scheme, although the 1980s Games Workshop scheme has a bit more neon green to it which I haven't quite nailed. If I was starting again I would try introducing something like Moot Green from the current range into the scheme.<br />

Here is my collection of Rogue Trader Orks. Most of them are from this Space Ork Raiders box, except for the <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/combat-cards-ork-warchief.html">Warchief "Boglob"</a> who is from my Combat Cards project.<br />

This is another of GW's impressive plastic character minis which I've been really enjoying since they started releasing them. I've even been tempted into painting some <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/wfb-nurgle-chaos-lord.html">fantasy minis</a>. The <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Officio-Prefectus-Commissar">official version of this mini</a> has an amazing paint job, particularly the face which looks really grizzled and battle-worn. I was very impressed with this and set to recreate it as closely as I could, although for the rest of the mini I've deliberately done something different to the GW version, because as much as I enjoy doing scheme-matches there is more to life than just trying to recreate what someone else has already done better!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3A1lBNdFOjOZuAhqtd70oo_oL28-C39Ar4e0gutFTUxMaRwiCwKUOQktVE_-B5T3U8KAAXKZaVPjB3N4bpzVFIEKzisNFMSmSMOGmxzcW5-XrLkAfzWND9sF6i9i2FoNZ5dyJoHhd6w/s1600/IMG_1898.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3A1lBNdFOjOZuAhqtd70oo_oL28-C39Ar4e0gutFTUxMaRwiCwKUOQktVE_-B5T3U8KAAXKZaVPjB3N4bpzVFIEKzisNFMSmSMOGmxzcW5-XrLkAfzWND9sF6i9i2FoNZ5dyJoHhd6w/s1600/IMG_1898.JPG" height="400" width="258" /></a></div>
<div>
I'm trying to paint these singles to the very best standard I can. Here I've tried something new by using a bright green mixed with some metallic used sparingly for the glow of the plasma cell and a touch on the power sword too. I am told that this is called Object Source Lighting but I think that glow is a perfectly good word! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlReMxSZyVtn7nenJbJ_eCCBP3XNkEOoMcA1khHL0kebASwfaH9GayIsPx6B5jwDx-323lLk0h39HsrlcNke8Ki8QhKVtHTWuNDX-UdHxBiCuLcdwwVzq77hmsrun8oKrqbJgKc48xZcE/s1600/IMG_1900.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlReMxSZyVtn7nenJbJ_eCCBP3XNkEOoMcA1khHL0kebASwfaH9GayIsPx6B5jwDx-323lLk0h39HsrlcNke8Ki8QhKVtHTWuNDX-UdHxBiCuLcdwwVzq77hmsrun8oKrqbJgKc48xZcE/s1600/IMG_1900.JPG" height="400" width="257" /></a></div>
<div>
Recently I have been really trying to improve the quality of the metallic areas on my minis. The back face of this sword and the hand-guard have come out particularly nicely. The idea of using the darking metallic from opposite ends of the two parts of the blades was nicked from the official scheme and I will definitely using that one again!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbz5JncBZdrD2VNj9p-LeHd9Q6hkI4n8z348BmG861fzeh4WoVh4ZY3EjzK_vdUBab1JZDun-E3l52hPtfSJstbGH2KiJESwdyHsM_sLVA8n3Lkkt2otqSWY4ZlO2Hjsf9FNsym-TwpCs/s1600/IMG_1901.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbz5JncBZdrD2VNj9p-LeHd9Q6hkI4n8z348BmG861fzeh4WoVh4ZY3EjzK_vdUBab1JZDun-E3l52hPtfSJstbGH2KiJESwdyHsM_sLVA8n3Lkkt2otqSWY4ZlO2Hjsf9FNsym-TwpCs/s1600/IMG_1901.JPG" height="400" width="357" /></a></div>
<div>
The coat was inspired by British Army WWII desert uniform, although when you see it on this mini it ends up looking like a fairly standard Cadian-type scheme. It's based around a 50:50 mix of Steel Legion Drab and Zandri Dust, moving up to to pure Zandri and then highlights of Kislev Flesh which I find works very well on top of a creamy brown like this. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Readers who know this mini well will notice that there is a power cable that stops abruptly. It should be connected to the bionic arm but this piece is <i>very </i>fragile and broke when it was cut from the sprue. Unfortunately it couldn't be salvaged. I would recommend a very sharp knife and a very careful hand when assembling this one.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As usual 40k cat was on hand to oversee the photoshoot. Although I've photographed my last couple of minis on a white background, I couldn't get a shot of this mini that was anywhere near decent enough without reverting to the trust old green backdrop. I'm continuing to work on my photo set up and hope to back in action with the white background shots soon.</div>

This time last year I put <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/hand-of-junk-100-minis-of-2013.html">all the minis I'd painted during 2013</a> on my table for a group shot. I decided that it was worth doing again for 2014 as I'd completed about 50 minis. It is pretty much impossible to get a decent shot of everything at once so I've shot this from a couple of angles. Below each picture is a link to the blog posts about the minis in that shot.</div>

<div>
Finally, the Brain of Morbius diorama which is on display at my brother's. Overall it was a fun year of painting, with my focus changing from army painting to single miniatures and trying to improve my technique as much as possible. Although I didn't get anywhere near the 100 minis that I finished last year, I did hit 50 which is about one a week. I think the same again is probably a good target for 2015. </div>

Happy New Year!</div>

Similar to the<a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/forgeworld-horus-heresy-navigator.html"> Navigator</a> I posted last week, this is based around a Rakarth Flesh base and a crimson wash, followed by some highlights.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The really rotten patches have been given a touch of flesh mixed with yellows and reds before the wash goes one. I've also used touches of blue and red glaze sparingly, particularly where stomach is torn open to show his innards.<br />

This week I am experiment with a new version of my little photo setup. I know that serious bloggers take take all their pictures on a white background. Unfortunately my camera isn't up to much so I am still not that happy with these but I will continue to experiment.Danny Kastigaunthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17906083369915618434noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1922838597775752652.post-82014042821427011092014-12-14T10:00:00.000-08:002014-12-14T10:00:01.924-08:00Forgeworld: Horus Heresy NavigatorI am back after a planned hiatus that ended up being a lot longer than I was originally expecting... This is one of the models that GW has been selling as event-only models this year, and I am quite fond of its Rogue Trader style so I collected one at "Warhammerfest" a couple of months back.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3tNBinBEfaQGYY1H1KCHAbjHLytwwxIUufKNPETn7DtnCdHFoLO-DpH5PhYAu2bxP84IMcHukoN82y5J0IG-yh6yOOja2gr6acNkX3dgse-4V_sAgrqbHjElTyKOvWwtz9dENfcnlr8M/s1600/IMG_1586.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3tNBinBEfaQGYY1H1KCHAbjHLytwwxIUufKNPETn7DtnCdHFoLO-DpH5PhYAu2bxP84IMcHukoN82y5J0IG-yh6yOOja2gr6acNkX3dgse-4V_sAgrqbHjElTyKOvWwtz9dENfcnlr8M/s1600/IMG_1586.JPG" height="320" width="252" /></a></div>
I fancied trying out an alternative way of painting skin after seeing the Imperial Guard Comissar Model that came out earlier this year, and a painting guide from White Dwarf for a Vampire Counts model. These both use a much paler base colour - Rakarth Flesh - and then use a scarlet wash as well as the usual flesh shade. I had a go at this approach on this mini and it has worked well, so I am going to try to develop it a bit further with my next mini,<br />

I used the same recipe for the fur collar as I use on my second edition Space Wolves. I did think about attempting an exotic red fur but I chickened out...<br />

I used Nihilakh Oxide for cogs on the staff, as well as a couple of other washes, but I wan't particularly happy with the final results. I've not been that pleased with my metallics recently, so I am going to concentrate on getting them right on my next mini.<br />

The robe is based on GW Caliban Green worked upwards through to Warboss Green and Moot Green. The base started life as Astrogranite which re-painted with a brown/red mix and then washed purple. This was picked out from what I call my "5th edition shelf". When I got back into 40k in late 5th edition, metal models in blisters were getting rarer and rarer and I spent far too much money trawling eBay for stuff that I didn't really need. Oh well, the deal I did with myself is that it will all be painted - eventually! The motto: "You bought it, you painted it!"<br />

This mini is in what I call the "dull spot" - it's totally out of fashion, but not old enough to be thought of as "vintage" or a "classic". Anyway, I still think its a nice sculpt and I am very pleased to have one in my collection.Danny Kastigaunthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17906083369915618434noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1922838597775752652.post-27543028731450025972014-09-08T15:44:00.001-07:002014-09-08T15:44:45.306-07:00Grukk Again, Competition Results<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After an utterly chaotic (but massively fun) weekend in real life I am not only a day late but I'm afraid I don't have any models finished. Instead, here is another picture of Grukk who finished second in our local store's painting competition.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiJhi4gpFKu6pEjtb7HLnDmEPDp_GUIjJ4Hta2UnI82_5KGCZ6fj75OfBsyrwNK9d7RhXjWbGqdlhJKA47XTm0g02RIg27W37Dq_mBMFBoJOwEnwXkYh6Yhow2ar10cdBbtH8xNnTMqfc/s1600/10644883_285406658332234_1674065352363387561_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiJhi4gpFKu6pEjtb7HLnDmEPDp_GUIjJ4Hta2UnI82_5KGCZ6fj75OfBsyrwNK9d7RhXjWbGqdlhJKA47XTm0g02RIg27W37Dq_mBMFBoJOwEnwXkYh6Yhow2ar10cdBbtH8xNnTMqfc/s1600/10644883_285406658332234_1674065352363387561_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
In this picture he's on my desk at work waiting to go into the shop in my lunch break. Eagle-eyed readers will be able to work out my real first name...(!). I started this blog using a pseudonym because I was a bit embarrassed about getting back into 40k in my 30s but I don't care any more and regular post shots of minis on my personal Facebook.<br />

Anyway, back to the competition. Although I did take the top spot, when I went back to the shop Grukk had been put on display next to my <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/ork-painboy.html">Painboy</a>. It is great to have two minis on display at Games Workshop and I am far prouder of this than a grown man really should be!<br />

This was my favourite entry in the competition, by James Whitney, which got third place. I think that the subtle conversion work to take this mini from fantasy to 40k is absolutely top drawer. I didn't even know this mini existed until I saw this, so I've added it to my "to paint" list. I am going leave it as fantasy model rather than trying to recreate what James has already nailed!Danny Kastigaunthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17906083369915618434noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1922838597775752652.post-88787862782778186462014-08-31T08:54:00.000-07:002014-08-31T08:54:05.766-07:00Grukk Face-RippaI've become a bit of an Orkspert in recent months it seems... Here's the finished Grukk, to go along with the <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/ork-painboy.html">Painboy</a>, and the<a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/space%20ork%20raiders%20project"> Rogue Trader Orks</a> that I have been working recently. My apologies for the awful pun. I have done somwhere between 12 and 20 hours on this mini and I am a bit frazzled. There's a <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/orky-business.html">Work in Progress post</a> on this model from last week too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMPIXGIT3bknPo4dGPReR4SNEc4kuW-7AnIU01pS9vOwfWs7oe9b01Jyz-zRM8nn61_qQG3Ckbfv8juB4Pjg3tDN6-tY9DAec8XK4bGToi8M1aDdhaZ5XqjsERMNIoy2aH49xLqeKD6nw/s1600/grukk+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMPIXGIT3bknPo4dGPReR4SNEc4kuW-7AnIU01pS9vOwfWs7oe9b01Jyz-zRM8nn61_qQG3Ckbfv8juB4Pjg3tDN6-tY9DAec8XK4bGToi8M1aDdhaZ5XqjsERMNIoy2aH49xLqeKD6nw/s1600/grukk+(3).JPG" height="291" width="320" /></a></div>
This is another mini that I've been asked to paint as closely as possible to GW version. There are a couple of bits that I have simplified, but overall I don't think it is a bad job of recreating the original at all.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtbSCpH05ZjLexMmGRCsmejdwuGD22Vm4Z_kjg_oLOoyZwR4FeKRDpvMZiwXJg1MI72BD3rq-5ktJxwTQwU42FikPCySHsvlMNvNSMx60oRct9ANLneuYOmT_Exs_4D3kcZGpl7Oz4cSU/s1600/grukk+comparison.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtbSCpH05ZjLexMmGRCsmejdwuGD22Vm4Z_kjg_oLOoyZwR4FeKRDpvMZiwXJg1MI72BD3rq-5ktJxwTQwU42FikPCySHsvlMNvNSMx60oRct9ANLneuYOmT_Exs_4D3kcZGpl7Oz4cSU/s1600/grukk+comparison.png" height="291" width="640" /></a></div>
Looking at the comparison shot I have actually made my life more difficult by doing much finer checks than on the GW example. Oh well, it was a real test of my freehand which I have been working on a lot recently and my confidence for simple geometric stuff like this is pretty high now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYG1zf2xs1aLj73zwispU9tfmWj-CfD5TkgyfNf_5tiio3T5hmNPKJvWE8duGWpi1gCL3euU4PP-LVdJKcBWmbZfPIYlS6cvApiN2mzDMsbwLLDOwRUfgUg8_NTywTdo8oFoNZP2rZ56M/s1600/grukk+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYG1zf2xs1aLj73zwispU9tfmWj-CfD5TkgyfNf_5tiio3T5hmNPKJvWE8duGWpi1gCL3euU4PP-LVdJKcBWmbZfPIYlS6cvApiN2mzDMsbwLLDOwRUfgUg8_NTywTdo8oFoNZP2rZ56M/s1600/grukk+(1).JPG" height="400" width="330" /></a></div>
This top view shows the full extent of the checks on that shoulder pad. They ended up a touch distorted because to make things simpler I was always following the line of the armour plate. Overall the effect is pretty nice and very orky!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrHQhEyxfagjjzUddmpkD889DjQZifYBH1tyaxt6Pci_yhhPOLL2gKbH4MNKT_WeR6Vu0dpgKurmaQkhsPKD1LbgBXF5uR67T6Zaf2FPtJXKift0bzV10dQ5HDU1twvtyIXFeXkqVASok/s1600/grukk+(1).PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrHQhEyxfagjjzUddmpkD889DjQZifYBH1tyaxt6Pci_yhhPOLL2gKbH4MNKT_WeR6Vu0dpgKurmaQkhsPKD1LbgBXF5uR67T6Zaf2FPtJXKift0bzV10dQ5HDU1twvtyIXFeXkqVASok/s1600/grukk+(1).PNG" height="320" width="275" /></a></div>
This view shows off some more of the freehand on this mini. The power klaw has tiny checks and "teeth" as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhTypNFuoExnTjnMFwwaOBbr2agik91rM7YQsaoHSBoPcyi0G75GDTvUiula9VaUAUIqMfCCb8_wEHWSDL8DB2fsajsGCDa6gfn5gVL0HK4taHN-4N6cQN18IN3Cpe7VcM_thucitCQ6s/s1600/grukk+(5).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhTypNFuoExnTjnMFwwaOBbr2agik91rM7YQsaoHSBoPcyi0G75GDTvUiula9VaUAUIqMfCCb8_wEHWSDL8DB2fsajsGCDa6gfn5gVL0HK4taHN-4N6cQN18IN3Cpe7VcM_thucitCQ6s/s1600/grukk+(5).JPG" height="400" width="303" /></a></div>
I'm also rather pleased with the way that the leather on the weapon holsters has come out. This is my usual black / Stormvermin Fur mixtures in various layers up to pure grey for the highlight. Also, there are some more checks! Now wonder I couldn't see straight at the end of the week.<br />

One last view. I wasn't very happy with the quality of these pictures. I needed to get him finished to go into our local store painting competition, which meant that I was taking the pictures late in the evening. I use a little video camera light for these shoots, but without the natural light to help out my little setup struggles and you end up with too much shadow. When he's back from our stores display case I may yet re-shoot these.Danny Kastigaunthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17906083369915618434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1922838597775752652.post-72239896071433542982014-08-25T09:48:00.000-07:002014-08-25T09:48:20.199-07:00Orky Business<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/ork-painboy.html">Ork Painboy</a> from a few weeks ago is currently on display in our local Games Workshop. I've always fancied putting something in their cabinet but never got round to until Poot took matters into his own hands and presented the mini to the manager.</div>

I've let myself off having anything new finished for this week, even with the extra day off work for the bank holiday, because I want to finish the model I am working on at the moment to the highest possible standard. The model in question is Grukk Facerippa from the recent Stormclaw set. I am thinking about putting him into our store's painting competition, but my main motivation is to do the very best I can on the mini and not rush it for blogging purposes.</div>

I don't usually like to post WIP shots, but I had taken a few for the "client" so I thought I'd stick em up. I'm reasonably pleased with these checks but I will be very glad when they are finished!<br />

I am currently trying to develop my freehand and I'm getting reasonably comfortable with simple shapes like these, although I have simplified the design somewhat (the 'Eavy Metal version has three teeth on the weapon stock).<br />

I'm using the current GW scheme for the skin which works really well. In the picture above I've done three of the five steps and its already looking rather nice even if I do say so myself.<br />

I am very impressed with this sculpt and I am very glad to have had the chance to paint him. I am thinking about adding the Space Wolf character from the set to my "portfolio" but being a limited edition mini he's already rather costly on eBay.<br />

I am gradually painting all the original 1995 sculpts, and this latest mini is the second of the two leaders from the set.<br />

My tutorial for painting orlocks in this style is <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/tutorial-necromunda-orlock-scheme-1.html">here.</a> I think that I've got about four more minis to paint in this set before I am finished. Now that I've got going again with this one I don't think that it will take me too long, and its high time that this one got put to bed.<br />

Well, it is a StuG Assault Gun from the excellent Flames of War starter set that has been painted bright red. Allow me to explain...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEM1qZUzc2H3vc_NVp1qwjf8BL8_8iI0FtpsyOWg_ASoeO8YAAqVhfqO6NhQtgiiMlAQT8NUv9uuzTjhyphenhyphenMJxoCfu7TL50cFBoagRY6bjYkK2_G2WA62w4Vd5xq2C8wqDYvtrmkbf36fj4/s1600/red+stug.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEM1qZUzc2H3vc_NVp1qwjf8BL8_8iI0FtpsyOWg_ASoeO8YAAqVhfqO6NhQtgiiMlAQT8NUv9uuzTjhyphenhyphenMJxoCfu7TL50cFBoagRY6bjYkK2_G2WA62w4Vd5xq2C8wqDYvtrmkbf36fj4/s1600/red+stug.JPG" height="286" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
As well as painting minis and writing this blog, another thing that I should have grown out of by now is playing in a band. I wanted to design some badges to give away at gigs, and the inspiration was this poster for the 1966 film Battle of the Bulge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiihvgYvlO_gMeCI0Ot-m-D6lzh0JatosTMVERsSfTR1v1Spm3qmVn510jxkFMc94VUKnrcUuGXR0dEsSn-jijlzSRpNhK-NKKavojaQ1pooY_fSWgey7xtAEJ5a3xl9piDMoC6wsozvOg/s1600/battle-of-the-bulge-movie-poster-1966-1020170499.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiihvgYvlO_gMeCI0Ot-m-D6lzh0JatosTMVERsSfTR1v1Spm3qmVn510jxkFMc94VUKnrcUuGXR0dEsSn-jijlzSRpNhK-NKKavojaQ1pooY_fSWgey7xtAEJ5a3xl9piDMoC6wsozvOg/s1600/battle-of-the-bulge-movie-poster-1966-1020170499.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<div>
Being a pretty novice designer, I didn't stand much chance of recreating this, so instead I downloaded a schematic of a StuG, block coloured it red, and came up with these:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNTWUiHd8LVQD1mVri6F_CVOphbQWjfgNccVmSnbKEfuykaQz8yoLO9bS7hau4Y8YgRLCJc2JAI8pqOexuewTaH5xKyx5JrdZ2F6Dm_JS2qPUjdLSxZ0q0Fs-bdGt7QbHNz_Q9Fqfzs9w/s1600/badges+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNTWUiHd8LVQD1mVri6F_CVOphbQWjfgNccVmSnbKEfuykaQz8yoLO9bS7hau4Y8YgRLCJc2JAI8pqOexuewTaH5xKyx5JrdZ2F6Dm_JS2qPUjdLSxZ0q0Fs-bdGt7QbHNz_Q9Fqfzs9w/s1600/badges+(2).JPG" height="272" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
They proved to be quite popular, and I've ended up adopting the red StuG logo for a lot of the band's promotional material. Here's our album cover...</div>

<div>
Anyway, I decided that it would be fun to paint up an actual Flames of War mini in the same way. Here is a traditional shot of the mini:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0_zieG5mhHD0zmMe_rmzgDn4UewHUUEmErAU0oA39eXPYq8HNHURDPjXLmNOmKg1ktP35HkTk27kHNPVRIsTK5RmCL_Vftt1soaZik7aKimwLt9qHvpXujZ7YxZ0ME0hrBP2sV3zTC8U/s1600/normal+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0_zieG5mhHD0zmMe_rmzgDn4UewHUUEmErAU0oA39eXPYq8HNHURDPjXLmNOmKg1ktP35HkTk27kHNPVRIsTK5RmCL_Vftt1soaZik7aKimwLt9qHvpXujZ7YxZ0ME0hrBP2sV3zTC8U/s1600/normal+(3).JPG" height="187" width="320" /></a></div>
As a paint job its pretty simple. It is based around GW Khorne Red, with some Vallejo Scarlet mixed in for layering and highlighting, before a nice red glaze to finish it off.<br />
<br />
If you're interested in finding out a bit more about the band have a look at:<br />

I'd describe this scheme as "tabletop+". It is designed to be reasonably quick to do but produce a really nice quality result.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6IoXNsMRBKfAAKjj_6RrHdAyBNjUULfF_ZOCGejgRu4sLMpBbC5qPWy_YlnlIOrzazRC61Y6o3H65mzCOj7QHIw2mRhRm5OqHUNHC6f7h99Tb3GX8R8iz-LZZ-MikZshHEeegGyWWsxY/s1600/main+group+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6IoXNsMRBKfAAKjj_6RrHdAyBNjUULfF_ZOCGejgRu4sLMpBbC5qPWy_YlnlIOrzazRC61Y6o3H65mzCOj7QHIw2mRhRm5OqHUNHC6f7h99Tb3GX8R8iz-LZZ-MikZshHEeegGyWWsxY/s1600/main+group+2.jpg" height="312" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
Those familiar with the Vostroyan range will notice that the example mini that I have picked has had a small conversion. The flamer nozzle has been sawn off and replaced with a melta nozzle. I used a small piece of pin to make it a bit tougher.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1AWfueL-BXBw2_u2wdt7HJkPxA2P6YXayCMuaZ6jD1nOpkfOqRMik-BIgtP578dSIsrADtukSuENakKslhPYSWnGopuRBF5fQWXId94beKpsWu5Cu8FxGhljZNsH1Oa1qqR8rg2UVblc/s1600/flamer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1AWfueL-BXBw2_u2wdt7HJkPxA2P6YXayCMuaZ6jD1nOpkfOqRMik-BIgtP578dSIsrADtukSuENakKslhPYSWnGopuRBF5fQWXId94beKpsWu5Cu8FxGhljZNsH1Oa1qqR8rg2UVblc/s1600/flamer.jpg" height="220" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
So here's the step by step guide. I use a mix of Vallejo, Army Painter, old and new GW paints. Where I've used anything else, I've listed the alternative in GW's current range. There are no prizes for guessing that I start from a black undercoat.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5YKiqaGuppTm3zmzWlWu6_ex61CEts1Xl2AYlfadMzryN8xoMo66Ljg3isJq5wdVZ4LJZEnIz17pNPQNaP-UqxcAtbkhcfPyuPSFJ8Hbs4tpkXOM2D_KtuXFv0zjj1NHH5Mjg_U9S_vc/s1600/four+views.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5YKiqaGuppTm3zmzWlWu6_ex61CEts1Xl2AYlfadMzryN8xoMo66Ljg3isJq5wdVZ4LJZEnIz17pNPQNaP-UqxcAtbkhcfPyuPSFJ8Hbs4tpkXOM2D_KtuXFv0zjj1NHH5Mjg_U9S_vc/s1600/four+views.jpg" height="320" width="247" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<b>Basecoats</b></div>
<div>
This scheme is based around a dark brown and a brassy metallic. The vast majority of the mini starts with one of these two colours, but there is an alternative metallic to provide some contrast, and some other bits and pieces are picked out.</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Faceplate, armour, insignia, melta nozzle: GW Tin Tin Bitz / Warplock Bronze</li>
<li>Coat, fur hat, rifle stock: GW Rhinox Hide</li>
<li>Melta hardware, toecaps, melta hose: GW Leadbelcher and Abaddon Black mixed 1:1</li>
<li>Melta insignia: Vallejo Heavy Warmgrey / GW Rakarth Flesh</li>
<li>Base: Vallejo Neutral Grey and Black mixed 1:1 / GW Mechanicus Standard Grey</li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiNsn4dvbU6PZSFP84iSdtqrSW0msGi0K77LFbmB4ZPDYzRSX7f009LKD2rGZthOSGk6NG2MyJMFH9wRvQ-YH-sjekBgrXDUkaiQDnJMgS5h2vRj5McCYZeHjaDZGU9wSOj4vMMk5Yemo/s1600/basecoats+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiNsn4dvbU6PZSFP84iSdtqrSW0msGi0K77LFbmB4ZPDYzRSX7f009LKD2rGZthOSGk6NG2MyJMFH9wRvQ-YH-sjekBgrXDUkaiQDnJMgS5h2vRj5McCYZeHjaDZGU9wSOj4vMMk5Yemo/s1600/basecoats+2.JPG" height="320" width="254" /></a></div>
<div>
<b>Red Greatcoat</b></div>
<div>
Getting a really nice rich red is very important to the final look of these minis. My biggest criticism of my own painting is that too many minis end up dark and dingy, and the red areas brighten these models up no end.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I use a technique that starts with a drybrush but works up through to proper highlighting. The initial drybrush helps you get a natural gradient between the light and dark areas, which you then add paint on top off to make a nice strong red that doesn't appear drybrushed at all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0WvDJRZeVN7ZM9fIvBWjC8m39V5vrMa3vpiyn9ONW-vU_o-1FWcnR0oBs_NPf3GGsMy0I9_OFYPeWJq_OR5nEuIVvh4xbVFDc3V3gTHqWSyFWS4QZAAoygWqo7jJ23bTJMO8J3WNehA0/s1600/Red+Drybrush.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0WvDJRZeVN7ZM9fIvBWjC8m39V5vrMa3vpiyn9ONW-vU_o-1FWcnR0oBs_NPf3GGsMy0I9_OFYPeWJq_OR5nEuIVvh4xbVFDc3V3gTHqWSyFWS4QZAAoygWqo7jJ23bTJMO8J3WNehA0/s1600/Red+Drybrush.JPG" height="320" width="243" /></a></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Greatcoat: GW Khorne Red - Drybrush</li>
</ul>
Now the same colour is added with a wet brush to strengthen and richen the colour.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgrmbOZ6Gz_AZZ_33RtjKYmJQx0RStEWDLFsRtWI1BxbZfk33pQEDE2QB9vKaHISSjE6WWpeVLCdBkVNVExNE3jK5s83aDImSOVYHjKGTqDqTdz_YSzZzdJLdNfoRzfepAKYP-WnxfpjM/s1600/Red+Step+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgrmbOZ6Gz_AZZ_33RtjKYmJQx0RStEWDLFsRtWI1BxbZfk33pQEDE2QB9vKaHISSjE6WWpeVLCdBkVNVExNE3jK5s83aDImSOVYHjKGTqDqTdz_YSzZzdJLdNfoRzfepAKYP-WnxfpjM/s1600/Red+Step+2.JPG" height="320" width="234" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Greatcoat: GW Khorne Red</li>
</ul>
Finally, a highlight red goes on to really make these parts of the mini stand out. Note that I use a red glaze as well which goes on in the Finishing Touches stage.</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Greatcoat: Vallejo Scarlet / GW Wazdakka Red</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuMgH_PxxLFYyl3P5LwBXjVAl2FWBUyS6d3xC3U7r5E1MpInmCO7mZm39XmdiT-HMg0uoVspsKmCY3yRshkig1csAqCFVBaxGaN2vAP_xZ_YeOqlcpA4PE7JE8i5rcqko_4jAjnTAb1ro/s1600/Red+Highlight.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuMgH_PxxLFYyl3P5LwBXjVAl2FWBUyS6d3xC3U7r5E1MpInmCO7mZm39XmdiT-HMg0uoVspsKmCY3yRshkig1csAqCFVBaxGaN2vAP_xZ_YeOqlcpA4PE7JE8i5rcqko_4jAjnTAb1ro/s1600/Red+Highlight.JPG" height="320" width="243" /></a></div>
<div>
<b>Fur</b></div>
<div>
Again, this is really important to lighten the mini. A couple of really quick and easy dry produces gives a fur effect that looks spot on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-FsUrVElS2429vs6qwnnn6EQ_5xww6s_D0_vt2ro5m0QCbg4zl8W3JnJffEPIcd1TzxLsfXVDP8mBam6wf_LDzrUI9glu-SWlpmXY7-9TaLi_fLQrZ6QDXnnTVSq6R8PGzx5lWElsNJ0/s1600/fur+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-FsUrVElS2429vs6qwnnn6EQ_5xww6s_D0_vt2ro5m0QCbg4zl8W3JnJffEPIcd1TzxLsfXVDP8mBam6wf_LDzrUI9glu-SWlpmXY7-9TaLi_fLQrZ6QDXnnTVSq6R8PGzx5lWElsNJ0/s1600/fur+2.jpg" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Fur: GW Stormvermin Fur - Drybrush</li>
<li>Fur: Vallejo Heavy Warmgrey / GW Rakarth Flesh - Drybrush</li>
</ul>
<b>Metallics</b></div>
<div>
Now the metallics are developed, and we are quickly getting towards the final look of the model. I use a mix of drybrush and proper highlights on different parts of the mini, whatever looks best in that particular area and gets the job done quickly.</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Faceplate, armour, insignia: Vallejo Gold / GW Balthasar Gold</li>
<li>Melta hardware, toecaps, pipes etc: GW Runefang Steel</li>
<li>Melta nozzle: Army Painter Strong Tone / GW Nuln Oil - wash<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd27BAbpfdZW1ONy3X2qe7cSsWW6oMOv80clQqdc7sPhlwluq5BFy3MzUbLhc7PNqxKoNpkiqxJKlvKTVbWAOiyto1h8qS1ykU3w8xobFJqFNy9VrK0_aNCVp6eFLGyPX5CQzgVquzPRo/s1600/metallics+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd27BAbpfdZW1ONy3X2qe7cSsWW6oMOv80clQqdc7sPhlwluq5BFy3MzUbLhc7PNqxKoNpkiqxJKlvKTVbWAOiyto1h8qS1ykU3w8xobFJqFNy9VrK0_aNCVp6eFLGyPX5CQzgVquzPRo/s1600/metallics+1.jpg" height="320" width="263" /></a></div>
</li>
</ul>
... and another level of highlights on some parts, mainly to brighten up the gold areas. I also brushed some gold over the melta tube just to provide a bit of variation.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Faceplate, armour, insignia: GW Runefang</li>
<li>Melta tube: Vallejo Gold / GW Balthasar Gold</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7klmC5PCtQM1Fp9ZitW2gO-84wxI3m_qKW4SuPsAHCAXzoJXBbKMz7Ofjkb7TWu_C53iu8U7eo8GH-6Fhu8uSgu6NLmaXCbNPxVh_KjA1cdNWniAbFeP77KZB_WT08pa5mMbTRCBzdo/s1600/metallics+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7klmC5PCtQM1Fp9ZitW2gO-84wxI3m_qKW4SuPsAHCAXzoJXBbKMz7Ofjkb7TWu_C53iu8U7eo8GH-6Fhu8uSgu6NLmaXCbNPxVh_KjA1cdNWniAbFeP77KZB_WT08pa5mMbTRCBzdo/s1600/metallics+2.jpg" height="320" width="259" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Finishing Touches</b></div>
<div>
Just a few bits and pieces and this Space-Russkie is ready for the table:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDXRDCHwp2CcV-IP4CwPiHnYjwfU0is6NhY1wCM4mtGssEb84HbIpGj5ulC9T5u95JKZixDNAYT7HPpvgRS38ewTry_AgaCOXVT_HbEPx0IL1MXfgpahVrJi5g129OX86v4HMah91f5oE/s1600/touches.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDXRDCHwp2CcV-IP4CwPiHnYjwfU0is6NhY1wCM4mtGssEb84HbIpGj5ulC9T5u95JKZixDNAYT7HPpvgRS38ewTry_AgaCOXVT_HbEPx0IL1MXfgpahVrJi5g129OX86v4HMah91f5oE/s1600/touches.JPG" height="320" width="263" /></a></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Hat Insignia: Vallejo Heavy Warmgrey / GW Rakarth Flesh</li>
<li>White Insignia (Hat and Melta) : GW Ogryn Flesh / Reikland Fleshshade</li>
<li>Ammo Pouches: Vallejo Heavy Warmgrey / GW Rakarth Flesh - very light drybrush to pick out the edges</li>
<li>Lenses: GW Castellan Green</li>
<li>Lenses: GW Skarsnik Green </li>
<li>Lenses GW Waywatcher Green - Glaze</li>
<li>Greatcoat: GW Bloodletter - Glaze</li>
</ul>
So there you have it - my way of doing Vostroyans. It occurs to me as I write this up that this particular scuplt wasn't a great choice for the tutorial because you can see his face! Perhaps I will post a mini-tutorial on Vostroyan faces and beards soon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
After painting some new releases over the last few weeks I decided it was time dip back into my collection of vintage models. This is the latest in my project inspired by the late 80s Citadel Spacewar Combat Cards. The idea is, of course, to paint the minis as closely to how they appear on the cards as possible.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgID5IyEJnWxJ-gc1jt446-KKHnIKtfsbKDlbGpCRjRXU3NQG4urQK_gt6Fpo28AYfb2FfOn7Ku4Fiz2_IAHgJkMf0FA29-HcMwuzNRWPfMitH43dT9U41-KvxR2VqK7UVmBZO37hLEXDE/s1600/RT+inquisitor+main.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgID5IyEJnWxJ-gc1jt446-KKHnIKtfsbKDlbGpCRjRXU3NQG4urQK_gt6Fpo28AYfb2FfOn7Ku4Fiz2_IAHgJkMf0FA29-HcMwuzNRWPfMitH43dT9U41-KvxR2VqK7UVmBZO37hLEXDE/s1600/RT+inquisitor+main.jpg" height="320" width="265" /></a></div>
Here's the comparison shot:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDNXoykHsBISUoYnDYkhk9ZvjUu-1s9GVFKg4yiVp9et-DrmDy4m_2yzK0m_bEtZ12kvUuPMwJghaMlzYeid3Ku7qYoT4dFNuVl30kWgfm-YYga9iP1SEkKtHqCdV-ZzJsLrcDveudftI/s1600/RT+inquisitor+comparison.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDNXoykHsBISUoYnDYkhk9ZvjUu-1s9GVFKg4yiVp9et-DrmDy4m_2yzK0m_bEtZ12kvUuPMwJghaMlzYeid3Ku7qYoT4dFNuVl30kWgfm-YYga9iP1SEkKtHqCdV-ZzJsLrcDveudftI/s1600/RT+inquisitor+comparison.jpg" height="252" width="400" /></a></div>
I'm pretty happy with the scheme match although I struggled a bit with the freehand this time. It doesn't look too bad in these shots but it is a bit off and I certainly won't be posting any close ups of it! I have a particular soft spot for this mini because it appears in the original Rogue Trader rulebook. It is a version with a different paint scheme and it is not specifically described as an Inquisitor, but its definitely the same mini.<br />

Finally, here is the whole card. I have one more mini left to do in this little project - I picked my favourite 5 from the set of 36. It would take me too long to do all of them, and some are very difficult to get hold of.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXIVivVwOfmTf-Ma6smva3fg4KVDTINDhMqqNgm4JLH0iPyhNk_BNdNwOoYaRxUoNTrgyMGTbGO82_9LtnKW1JnJ_YFNqvZturs604ZRQNn_m-B-WofLtdor4Ubpn3W6eBCItA3Zzvjm8/s1600/main+picture+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXIVivVwOfmTf-Ma6smva3fg4KVDTINDhMqqNgm4JLH0iPyhNk_BNdNwOoYaRxUoNTrgyMGTbGO82_9LtnKW1JnJ_YFNqvZturs604ZRQNn_m-B-WofLtdor4Ubpn3W6eBCItA3Zzvjm8/s1600/main+picture+2.jpg" height="370" width="400" /></a></div>
This is another of GW's excellent single sprue character models. I've been so impressed with these that I've even been tempted by a couple from the fantasy range. I've already done this <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/wfb-warriors-of-chaos-lord.html">Chaos Lord</a> and I've got the Nurgle equivalent edging its way closer and closer to my painting table.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is another of Poot's minis that I've painted for him. As usual he wanted it as as close as possible to the GW scheme and he provided all the recent Orky issues of White Dwarf as reference material. As you can see, if you were going for a proper pro-standard you'd use some green stuff where the head meets the neck.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilMJJbIcq4b3weAx_j2neELqhf99r07j1mYSU0-W51PVO5LN3SiyFgG2gP_LrDFz7pfP7KWB-FEy_ZM9-Odl5p2PtGJi4OxMIGSQWCTtQ-Wvd25QdIaFSOnsKmE8Xqqu9KtWNpJQIRnRw/s1600/painboy+(4).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilMJJbIcq4b3weAx_j2neELqhf99r07j1mYSU0-W51PVO5LN3SiyFgG2gP_LrDFz7pfP7KWB-FEy_ZM9-Odl5p2PtGJi4OxMIGSQWCTtQ-Wvd25QdIaFSOnsKmE8Xqqu9KtWNpJQIRnRw/s1600/painboy+(4).JPG" height="380" width="400" /></a></div>
The syringes on this mini are great fun. I think I could have made them a bit prettier, but I am always painting to a timetable for weekly blogposts and it was time get finished. I've been wondering recently if I should be taking more time over some minis - for example there's a fairly hideous highlight on the vertical bit of red piping which wouldn't have gotten past quality control if I wasn't in a rush...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As I paint more and more Orky gubbinz I get more and more confident with checks and I'm pretty happy with these. Generally I have been working on improving my freehand which until recently had been non-existent because I was too scared to even try it.<br />

This was getting to be a pain so I treated myself to a portable light, a Mecalight LED-480.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHc6oAWcZR44RyiYrEWH0ARfvOaTDTHR6dEx0C8aXnmsmAQ_hJwiKkHJhzpuR9vN1fFT1NrT81-MDh2MX5ayR32sQ8o5jHG32tgeYf4uMK2yZpUXrY9F9Ve9PpdOzW9KI4mqd-sK4iJVw/s1600/meccalight+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHc6oAWcZR44RyiYrEWH0ARfvOaTDTHR6dEx0C8aXnmsmAQ_hJwiKkHJhzpuR9vN1fFT1NrT81-MDh2MX5ayR32sQ8o5jHG32tgeYf4uMK2yZpUXrY9F9Ve9PpdOzW9KI4mqd-sK4iJVw/s1600/meccalight+(1).JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
These are really intended to be used with video cameras, and at £75 I am sure that there are cheaper ways of getting my hands on some portable lighting, but as soon as I saw this in action I had to have one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It comes with two diffusers, which snap on with magnets in a very satisfying way. I don't think that they make a great deal of difference in the pictures that I take, but anyway here are a few comparison shots of the different diffusers in action:<br />

I think that the differences in these shots are more to do with the autofocus/brightness adjustments etc. on the very average camera that I use than the diffusers. I think my next investment may be in a new camera, although I am bit nervous about spending lots of money and getting no real improvement in the pictures that I end up with...<br />
<br />
Something that I've found really useful are the points that can be used to connect it to a tripod. This isn't that useful for photographing minis, but it makes a great portable hobby light. I set it up in down in wargarage while I was watching a game last week.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is a bonus picture of 40k Cat getting involved with the same game. She was very interested in the Dakka Jets and decided that they were hers. She commanded them to great effect, SuperShootering a Rhino and two Vindicators to pieces.<br />

The Ork Flash Git kit fitted the bill, so I took one of Poot's into protective custody for painting. As usual, he wanted it as close as possible to the GW scheme.<br />

Regular readers will now that I'm a bit of a closet Ork fan, although I don't think I will ever have the patience to paint an entire horde (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGxwbhkDjZM">ain't nobody got time for that</a>). All the orky accessories on this mini are great fun, particularly the bionic arm, pirate's hat and targeting squig.<br />

I spent an inordinate amount of time on this model and it felt like my hands were going to fall off at one point, but I still forget to drill or paint the barrel. Poor show. I did do a nice job of the squig's cross hair though I say it myself - although it is far from perfect I decided to leave it rather than redoing it and making it worse.<br />

The highlights on the leather are based around matt black with increasing amounts of GW Stormvermin Fur mixed into it as you go up through the highlight levels. I think I even added some bone to pure Stormvermin for the final highlight.<br />

In this shot the light makes the leather highlights look pretty unsubtle but they are nicer in real life I promise!<br />

This shot shows how far the spent shell casings stick out of the model. This is a lovely bit of detail in the kit; Poot described it as "dramatic" which sums it up pretty well. However I don't think that they will stand up to play wear as they are very delicate and are held on with the tiniest dab of poly cement.<br />

This is the first one - one of the limited edition captains that was given away when the new GW website was launched.<br />

This is pretty much the only model that I've bought this year. Instead, I've been working on my backlog. Thanks to <a href="http://onwhitewingsweride.blogspot.co.uk/">Kobrakei</a> for helping me get my hands on this one without having to buy £60 of plastic that I didn't need, or paying ridiculous eBay prices.<br />

This mini is based on Vallejo "Periscopes" from their Panzer Aces range. I originally borrowed this paint from <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/guest-post-textbook-guard.html">Poot</a> for another project but I immediately told him that he wasn't having it back because its too nice. I am told that it is similar to GW Stegadon Scale Green but I have to say that I've never seen it up close.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfLsnHuB-P-Rx0tLSY4fX-jRvpTtsZzcD9fpVEOe68PQWtYKpBKxWiEtWSQWsAc4cXaWVlAlnufM5Tr4NJbfnStbXH84bvcGX0Lbqdx1ZGTAQoZkhnnU9PwcVF7762lXHUD03PbtzcOgU/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfLsnHuB-P-Rx0tLSY4fX-jRvpTtsZzcD9fpVEOe68PQWtYKpBKxWiEtWSQWsAc4cXaWVlAlnufM5Tr4NJbfnStbXH84bvcGX0Lbqdx1ZGTAQoZkhnnU9PwcVF7762lXHUD03PbtzcOgU/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="320" width="250" /></a></div>
The origin trim on this mini was a right pain. I used no less than for different oranges from two different manufacturers in various combinations with each other and with various reds but didn't find a way of making an orange that behaved itself in a satisfactory way. In the end, "just about ok" was the best I could do so I stuck with that rather than making it worse.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Who's idea was orange in the first place?! Which chapter is that even supposed to be?! The Midnight Jaffa Cakes perhaps... No? Anyway. The blue is nice!<br />

As usual, I am bang on trend and have prepared a tutorial to help people recreate the warpaint that features on the box from the original Ork release in 1987 - nearly thirty years ago! Barely a day goes by without people asking me for this tutorial. Honest.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMZUYZ-KNp7wIU3B369NjTX9gu7R7zVDNWtbcyKV0DODwbXOfrxwXtLtIg8pFAkDWx0XWMwfIMGmKWl65bc9yW7zBaehtN9TCZqe5KmpScJJKtpBVnej5YoH3CNk38oiiC0l_9IjWM7_0/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMZUYZ-KNp7wIU3B369NjTX9gu7R7zVDNWtbcyKV0DODwbXOfrxwXtLtIg8pFAkDWx0XWMwfIMGmKWl65bc9yW7zBaehtN9TCZqe5KmpScJJKtpBVnej5YoH3CNk38oiiC0l_9IjWM7_0/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="222" width="320" /></a></div>
It's a pretty simple process really but I though that it was worth writing up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8T5PpnaIu-sVd9chu-KFrOGwhlrLjPkPRhuxh1NAFpE-SO97Wm7xQC31gAtLnu0AVNE9y3M9FSUMYv_nsHS2A4BpLTu2si0olHRkhYCZyWHU6l9rFthUbpvlgEiae63WrGsRgSMUvp2A/s1600/eyes.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8T5PpnaIu-sVd9chu-KFrOGwhlrLjPkPRhuxh1NAFpE-SO97Wm7xQC31gAtLnu0AVNE9y3M9FSUMYv_nsHS2A4BpLTu2si0olHRkhYCZyWHU6l9rFthUbpvlgEiae63WrGsRgSMUvp2A/s1600/eyes.JPG" height="303" width="320" /></a></div>
There are no prizes for guessing that I work from a black undercoat. I block the eyes out a this stage using a foundation yellow so any mistakes can easily be tidied up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2MyOzJqD-VbBKj20XmzvPwmN-8b32RnHaEZ1t7lQXMo0tQ_W4mdQT2ui3dUUyvbs9LKvP0loHjQFEXi2THDrPe1XAjtOZWXvQNH2e4iuFK-ZhjgPugyBzoT-p0Nt1CAbZIdbNlCdlV4g/s1600/base+red.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2MyOzJqD-VbBKj20XmzvPwmN-8b32RnHaEZ1t7lQXMo0tQ_W4mdQT2ui3dUUyvbs9LKvP0loHjQFEXi2THDrPe1XAjtOZWXvQNH2e4iuFK-ZhjgPugyBzoT-p0Nt1CAbZIdbNlCdlV4g/s1600/base+red.JPG" height="320" width="282" /></a></div>
Next the red areas get their base coat. I used GW Khorne Red which I actually prefer to its Vallejo equivalent. A liberal amount of black should be left in the recesses to recreate the Rogue Trader look. This probably easier to see in the next step when the white is introduced.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaqy_uNGtuqyrOsISNomiVhvrqy19Sr1mEoo_6wHBMQ0FTe_hcqXcrNY0xW2deZwy435D_ZeTyBRBqVm173uiPyHSkEjKQTBSNnV-ns4DZ5FzfWFXvl73cDm0ZVRNhTaDpUcfiwN4Nrj4/s1600/base+white.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaqy_uNGtuqyrOsISNomiVhvrqy19Sr1mEoo_6wHBMQ0FTe_hcqXcrNY0xW2deZwy435D_ZeTyBRBqVm173uiPyHSkEjKQTBSNnV-ns4DZ5FzfWFXvl73cDm0ZVRNhTaDpUcfiwN4Nrj4/s1600/base+white.JPG" height="320" width="298" /></a></div>
The first coats of white go on. In this picture it has had a couple of very thin coats of GW Ceramite white. It goes on a bit chalky, but that's not a problem because it will be tidied up later. With this step, the bits you <i>don't </i>paint are as important as the bits that you do. A really nice strong black line should be left in the recesses - the ears and jawline are particularly good examples.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XKfrtkH6j6LWOJKF9GGltqIohnOBKD-2Kx96bTRiyGh1sAVaUhjlTgeN3TyUrKPCnp6rMCAUCJXDaKcL6BKP-pyvhBXnwTV1mvGbIYSIeorEjxg1OQ0rXNcptnCZzi8qtDShAaxLR6Q/s1600/first+layer.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XKfrtkH6j6LWOJKF9GGltqIohnOBKD-2Kx96bTRiyGh1sAVaUhjlTgeN3TyUrKPCnp6rMCAUCJXDaKcL6BKP-pyvhBXnwTV1mvGbIYSIeorEjxg1OQ0rXNcptnCZzi8qtDShAaxLR6Q/s1600/first+layer.JPG" height="320" width="313" /></a></div>
It's a bit tricky to pick this up in the picture, but the next step is to build layers on top of the white and red sections. The white just gets a nice thin coat of GW Skull White (yes I still have the old one) to take the chalkiness out of the white give it a nice finish. The red gets a first highlight with a 1:1 mix of the base coat with a lighter red. I used Vallejo Scarlet but there are probably two or three reds in the current GW range which would do the job.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTSe1yCsLF3R9gREKSQfFFYIv7eC5cKFvo7k_dIJCFJXiYdFtg_rlNUf21GlidOnEo0S2HAdz5FZJsiWdP6WNqREM3Lf9QVShHqFW2i3Spq4vuoJxH_elgjvQ-FDlqxsH7Py2MFS1cLag/s1600/second+layer.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTSe1yCsLF3R9gREKSQfFFYIv7eC5cKFvo7k_dIJCFJXiYdFtg_rlNUf21GlidOnEo0S2HAdz5FZJsiWdP6WNqREM3Lf9QVShHqFW2i3Spq4vuoJxH_elgjvQ-FDlqxsH7Py2MFS1cLag/s1600/second+layer.JPG" height="320" width="290" /></a></div>
There's no point doing any more work on the white now... You can't really highlight up any further! A nice final highlight goes on the red. Pure Vallejo Scarlet was my choice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ9PrpMhllaWe_FEG43p7sqjl4JxbY11hQ7gD6fFPyjLxQwOqArGGMPe7dltchy8XHqEAS7kNz8P7sMH3fB6iM7wabwRimtH9gGht9sMvgKa0qaIQPckDisFCyNuooE9LG0EAq0XSdLZk/s1600/black+lines.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ9PrpMhllaWe_FEG43p7sqjl4JxbY11hQ7gD6fFPyjLxQwOqArGGMPe7dltchy8XHqEAS7kNz8P7sMH3fB6iM7wabwRimtH9gGht9sMvgKa0qaIQPckDisFCyNuooE9LG0EAq0XSdLZk/s1600/black+lines.JPG" height="312" width="320" /></a></div>
The next step is the most difficult but also the most satisfying. With a very thin brush, and black line is added to the areas where the red and white meet. It adds to the black in the recesses to make the final look of the model really strong, and give it the Rogue Trader style that we are looking for.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiudorvRyZB63mlC81bKh0kRYli0P2HQJ_L13hsqmQJvGE_UvDywaNp-7AGQiJSjfgn3gPVl_hf9GH2sVbsPCT-sGf89XsFyP_pv7ml_TxtXKtQ_d1NbmshsDnX6N37pE3IH2Rec1vNmzc/s1600/brush.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiudorvRyZB63mlC81bKh0kRYli0P2HQJ_L13hsqmQJvGE_UvDywaNp-7AGQiJSjfgn3gPVl_hf9GH2sVbsPCT-sGf89XsFyP_pv7ml_TxtXKtQ_d1NbmshsDnX6N37pE3IH2Rec1vNmzc/s1600/brush.JPG" height="320" width="316" /></a></div>
This is the brush that I used for this step, and for all the freehand experiments that I'm doing at the moment. It is a Winsor Newton Series 7 Miniature 00 which <a href="http://handofjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/guest-post-textbook-guard.html">Poot</a> let me try out. I've been really impressed with it and told him that he's not having it back!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZvJy_d1aTRMa02AtZHEIRgnmx1BlpTZN-F-xjXBZHpObVgzDzDuzjNeWbMhwMtJUvPSBMP5jORodnvlZyxE0Uja2Ppc-f9e_DIxWON13KSBB_jx51iMkv2BYqZEVJdFSYQZZhWSkxugI/s1600/final+touches.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZvJy_d1aTRMa02AtZHEIRgnmx1BlpTZN-F-xjXBZHpObVgzDzDuzjNeWbMhwMtJUvPSBMP5jORodnvlZyxE0Uja2Ppc-f9e_DIxWON13KSBB_jx51iMkv2BYqZEVJdFSYQZZhWSkxugI/s1600/final+touches.JPG" height="320" width="281" /></a></div>
The finishing touches are some GW Bloodletter Glaze over the red areas, and a touch of wash in the eye sockets. This boy is ready for the Battle at the Farm!<br />
